Time Duration Calculator
Calculate the time elapsed between a start time and an end time. Choose whether the end time is on the same day or the following day, and get the total duration in hours, minutes and seconds.
This tool calculates clock-time duration, not timezone or daylight-saving changes. If the end time is earlier than the start time, choose the next-day option for an overnight interval.
What Is a Time Duration?
A time duration is the amount of time between a starting point and an ending point. It is useful for calculating work shifts, meeting lengths, study sessions, travel times, exercise periods and everyday schedules. Instead of estimating how long an activity took, you can enter the start and end times to calculate the interval.
This time duration calculator works with clock times and displays the elapsed time in several formats. It can handle same-day periods and overnight periods, such as a shift that starts in the evening and finishes the next morning.
How to Use the Time Duration Calculator
- Choose the start time. Enter the time when the activity began.
- Choose the end time. Enter the time when the activity finished.
- Select the correct day option. Choose same day for a normal daytime interval or next day for an overnight interval.
- Calculate duration. Review the total time, total minutes, total seconds and decimal hours.
- Swap or reset. Use the buttons to reverse the times or restore the example.
Example: Calculating Work Hours
If a work shift starts at 9:15 AM and ends at 5:45 PM on the same day, the elapsed duration is 8 hours and 30 minutes. In decimal hours, this equals 8.5 hours. If you need paid working time, remember that an unpaid lunch break or other unpaid break should be subtracted separately.
Calculating Overnight Durations
Some activities cross midnight. For example, a shift may start at 10:00 PM and finish at 6:00 AM the following day. Select the next-day option to calculate 8 hours. Without that option, the end time appears earlier than the start time, so the calculator warns you rather than treating the interval as a negative duration.
The next-day option adds 24 hours to the end-time calculation. Use it only when the end time truly occurs on the following day. If both times are on the same day and the end time is earlier, check the entries before proceeding.
Hours, Minutes, Seconds and Decimal Hours
The total duration is displayed as hours, minutes and seconds. Total minutes expresses the same interval as a number of minutes, while total seconds expresses it as a number of seconds. Decimal hours are often useful for timesheets: 1 hour 30 minutes equals 1.5 hours, not 1.30 hours.
To convert minutes into decimal hours, divide the minutes by 60. For example, 45 minutes is 45 ÷ 60 = 0.75 hours. When entering time into payroll or invoicing software, use the format that the system requests.
Common Uses for a Time Duration Calculator
- Work schedules: estimate the length of a shift before subtracting unpaid breaks.
- Meetings and appointments: determine how long a session lasted.
- Study and exercise: track the time spent on an activity.
- Travel planning: calculate the clock-time interval between departure and arrival when the times are in the same local time context.
- Project tracking: record elapsed hours for tasks and activities.
Important Limitations
This tool calculates a duration from two clock times. It does not know the date, location, timezone or daylight-saving rules for the interval. If you are comparing times across different timezones or dates when clocks change, use the relevant date and timezone information to calculate the accurate elapsed duration.
It also does not automatically subtract breaks. For a work shift with a 30-minute unpaid break, calculate the full shift and subtract 30 minutes from the result if that matches your workplace policy.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I calculate a duration across midnight?
Yes. Choose the next-day option when the end time occurs on the following calendar day.
What are decimal hours?
Decimal hours express minutes as a fraction of an hour. For example, 30 minutes is 0.5 hours and 15 minutes is 0.25 hours.
Does the calculator subtract lunch breaks?
No. It calculates the full interval between the two clock times. Subtract unpaid breaks separately when needed.
Can I use it for different timezones?
Not directly. Entered times are treated as simple clock times without timezone conversion or daylight-saving adjustment.
Important Note
This free time duration calculator is intended for everyday planning and estimates. For payroll, billing or official timesheets, verify the applicable rules for breaks, rounding and recorded working time.
