Free Area Calculator Online – Rectangle, Triangle & Circle

Area Calculator

Choose a shape, enter its measurements, and calculate its area instantly. Use any consistent unit, such as cm, m, inches, or feet.

Your calculated area will appear here.

Note: All dimensions must use the same unit. The result is expressed in that unit squared.

What Is an Area Calculator?

An area calculator helps you find the amount of two-dimensional surface inside a shape. Instead of working through each formula manually, you select a shape, enter its dimensions, and let the calculator perform the arithmetic. It is useful for school mathematics, home improvement, flooring estimates, garden planning, painting preparation, and many everyday measurement tasks.

Area is different from perimeter. Area measures the surface covered by a shape, while perimeter measures the total distance around its boundary. Area is written in square units, such as square meters (m²), square centimeters (cm²), square feet (ft²), or square inches (in²). If you measure a rectangle in feet, for example, multiplying its length by its width gives an answer in square feet.

How to Use This Online Area Calculator

  1. Choose the shape you want to measure: rectangle, triangle, circle, or trapezoid.
  2. Select a unit that matches your measurements, such as meters, centimeters, feet, or inches.
  3. Enter the required dimensions. Use positive numbers and keep all measurements in the same unit.
  4. Select Calculate Area to display the result and the formula used.
  5. Choose Reset to clear the values and start another calculation.

The calculator runs in your browser and gives a quick estimate from the values you enter. It does not automatically convert mixed units, so convert measurements first if one dimension is in centimeters and another is in meters.

Area Formulas for Common Shapes

Rectangle and Square

The area of a rectangle is length multiplied by width: A = l × w. A room that is 5 meters long and 4 meters wide has an area of 20 m². A square follows the same rule, but its length and width are equal. If each side is 3 meters, its area is 9 m².

Triangle

For a triangle, multiply the base by the perpendicular height and divide by two: A = (b × h) ÷ 2. A base of 8 cm and a height of 5 cm produces an area of 20 cm². The height must be measured at a right angle to the base, not along a sloping side.

Circle

The area of a circle is A = πr², where r is the radius—the distance from the center to the edge. If a circle has a radius of 2 meters, its area is approximately 12.566 m². If you know the diameter instead, divide it by two to obtain the radius before calculating.

Trapezoid

A trapezoid has a pair of parallel sides. Add the lengths of those parallel sides, divide their sum by two, and multiply by the perpendicular height: A = ((a + b) ÷ 2) × h. For parallel sides of 6 m and 10 m with a height of 4 m, the area is 32 m².

Practical Uses for Area Calculations

Flooring and rugs: Measure the length and width of a rectangular room to estimate its floor area. When purchasing flooring, allow for extra material to cover cuts, mistakes, and unusual corners. The extra amount depends on the material and room layout, so follow the supplier’s guidance.

Walls and painting: A rectangular wall’s area can help estimate paint coverage. For a more accurate estimate, subtract the area of large doors and windows, then compare the result with the coverage stated on the paint container. Surface texture and the number of coats can affect the amount required.

Gardens and outdoor projects: Calculate the area of a rectangular lawn, planting bed, or patio before estimating soil, seed, paving, or other materials. Irregular spaces can be divided into simpler shapes, calculated separately, and added together.

Learning mathematics: Students can use the calculator to check answers after applying the appropriate formula by hand. Comparing different dimensions also makes it easier to understand how changing a side length affects a shape’s area.

Tips for Getting an Accurate Result

  • Measure carefully and record the correct unit.
  • Use the same unit for every dimension in one calculation.
  • For a triangle, use its perpendicular height rather than a sloping side.
  • For a circle, enter the radius, not the diameter.
  • For a trapezoid, enter both parallel sides and the perpendicular height.
  • Round only at the end if you need a precise result for a project.

Remember that this tool calculates ideal geometric shapes. Real rooms, gardens, and building surfaces may have alcoves, angled edges, or other irregular features. Divide complex spaces into smaller shapes, calculate each area, and combine the results. For material purchasing or construction work, verify measurements on site and account for waste where appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions

What units does the area calculator support?

You can select meters, centimeters, millimeters, feet, inches, or yards. The answer uses the selected unit squared, for example cm² or ft².

Can I calculate the area of a circle using its diameter?

This calculator asks for radius. Divide the diameter by two first, then enter the resulting radius.

Why is area expressed in square units?

Area multiplies one length by another. Multiplying meters by meters produces square meters, while multiplying centimeters by centimeters produces square centimeters.

Can I mix centimeters and meters?

No. Convert all dimensions to the same unit before entering them. Mixing units without conversion can make the answer incorrect.

Is the calculator suitable for irregular shapes?

It calculates rectangles, triangles, circles, and trapezoids. For an irregular space, split it into simpler shapes, calculate each part, and add the results together.
