Average Calculator
Enter a list of numbers separated by commas, spaces or new lines. This tool calculates the arithmetic mean, median, mode, sum and count of your values.
Only finite numbers are accepted. If several values share the highest frequency, all modes are shown. If every value occurs once, the data set has no mode.
What Is an Average?
An average is a single value used to summarize a group of numbers. In everyday conversation, “average” usually means the arithmetic mean: add all values together and divide the total by how many values there are. Averages help summarize test scores, prices, measurements, daily expenses, performance metrics and many other numerical data sets.
However, the mean is not the only way to describe a typical value. The median identifies the middle value after sorting the numbers, while the mode identifies the value or values that occur most often. This calculator provides all three so you can choose the measure that best describes your data.
How to Use the Average Calculator
- Enter your numbers. Separate values with commas, spaces, semicolons or new lines.
- Choose Calculate average. The tool processes the values directly in your browser.
- Review the results. See the mean, median, mode, sum, count, minimum and maximum.
- Clear or reload the example. Use the buttons to start a new calculation or see a sample data set.
Mean, Median and Mode Explained
Arithmetic mean
The mean is calculated by dividing the sum of all values by the number of values. For example, the mean of 4, 6 and 8 is (4 + 6 + 8) ÷ 3 = 6. It uses every value, which makes it useful for many data sets. However, unusually high or low values can pull the mean away from the centre of most observations.
Median
The median is the middle value after the numbers are arranged from smallest to largest. With an odd number of values, it is the one in the centre. With an even number of values, it is the mean of the two central values. The median is often useful when data includes outliers, such as home prices or income figures.
Mode
The mode is the value that appears most often. A data set can have one mode, multiple modes or no mode when all values occur equally often. The calculator reports all values tied for the highest frequency. The mode can be helpful for finding the most common score, size, response or item in a data set.
Average Calculator Example
Consider the values 12, 18, 20, 25, 25 and 30. Their sum is 130 and there are six numbers, so the mean is 130 ÷ 6, or approximately 21.67. When sorted, the two central values are 20 and 25, so the median is 22.5. The number 25 appears twice while each other value appears once, so the mode is 25. The results describe different aspects of the same group.
When Should You Use Each Measure?
- Use the mean when you want a familiar overall average and the values are reasonably balanced.
- Use the median when extreme values may distort the mean or when you need the central observation.
- Use the mode when the most frequently occurring value is important.
For example, the median can better represent a typical property price in an area where a few luxury homes are much more expensive than the rest. The mean is often used to calculate average marks across a class. The mode may help identify the most frequently selected product size.
Tips for Accurate Results
Make sure each entry is a number and all values use the same unit. Convert mixed currencies, weights or measurement systems before calculating. Check for accidental duplicates or missing values, especially when working with copied spreadsheet data. The calculator treats every entered number as one observation, so repeated values count repeatedly.
Very large or very small numbers may be displayed in rounded form for readability. For official reporting or statistical work, keep your original data and follow the rounding rules required by your organization or assignment.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I enter decimal numbers?
Yes. Decimal and negative values are supported as long as they are valid finite numbers.
What separators can I use?
Use commas, spaces, semicolons or line breaks between numbers.
Why does the result say “No mode”?
This means every number appears the same number of times, so no value occurs more frequently than the others.
Does this calculator upload my numbers?

Important Note
This calculator is intended for general educational and everyday use. For formal statistical analysis, confirm that mean, median or mode is the appropriate measure for your data and check the results against your source values.
